EU Import Charges, Explained

When an Ashenfume bottle travels to the European Union, the customs office in your country collects VAT and import charges before it reaches your door. Here is where those charges come from, how they're calculated, and how to keep your total as low as possible.

Every Ashenfume parcel is declared at its full purchase price. VAT, customs duty, and handling fees are paid by the recipient on delivery.

Why the EU charges these fees

In 2024, about 4.6 billion online parcels worth under €150 entered the EU, and roughly 91% of them came from China. Many arrived duty free, which left European shops competing at a disadvantage. The sheer volume also strained customs offices and made it harder to stop unsafe products at the border.

The new duty and handling fee bring every seller outside the EU under the same rules European businesses already follow. They also fund the customs checks that keep the products in your home safe and genuine.

As an international house, Ashenfume follows every customs requirement in full, on every parcel we send.

How EU import charges work today

Since 2021VAT applies to every import into the EU, from the very first euro of value.
July 1, 2026The EU closed the old €150 customs duty exemption. Every parcel from outside the EU now owes customs duty, whatever its value.
November 1, 2026A new EU handling fee of €2 per distinct item applies to every parcel at any value. It is non-refundable.

Why the VAT looks higher than you expect

EU customs calculates VAT on the full landed value of your parcel. That means the price of your order, plus shipping, plus customs duty, plus the handling fee, all added together. The VAT rate is then applied to that combined total, so it lands a little above a simple percentage of the bottle's price.

Order value€100.00
Shipping€22.00
Customs duty€3 per item on orders under €150€3.00
EU handling fee€2 per item€2.00
VAT19% of €127.00, the combined total€24.13
Paid at delivery€29.13

How we declare every parcel

Every Ashenfume parcel is declared at the exact price you paid. The customs form lists each bottle by name, size, and value. The EU also requires product identifiers, such as SKU codes, on every declaration. Each bottle is matched to its exact listing, so customs can trace every item from our shelf to your door.

An accurate declaration is what protects your delivery. It clears customs smoothly, arrives on schedule, and keeps your bottle safe from holds, penalties, or a return to sender.

For that reason, we are unable to list a lower value or mark a purchase as a gift, for any order or any customer. The EU has no lower bracket for imported goods, and these rules apply equally to every seller outside the Union.

How we help you save

Shipping is priced to stay economical and shown separately at checkout, so the price of each bottle reflects the perfume itself and you always see exactly what delivery costs.

  • Gentle shipping rates. Most single-item orders ship to the EU for just $18 to $25.
  • Free shipping over $400. Every EU order over $400 USD (around €350) ships free, a savings of $40 to $50.
  • Order together. Pool an order with friends, family, or fellow collectors. You reach free shipping faster, and everything arrives in one parcel.
  • Matching bottles share a fee. The €2 handling fee counts each distinct product once, so two bottles of the same scent in one parcel carry a single €2.
  • Shops and stockists. If you run a boutique or would love to carry Ashenfume in your country, write to us and ask about wholesale pricing.

Buying from a shop inside Europe

Perfume sold by any shop in Europe carries VAT as well. A European retailer pays import VAT and duty when its stock comes in, and that cost is built into the shelf price. Whichever way an Ashenfume bottle reaches you, the tax travels with it. Ordering direct from us means you see those charges at your door.
