The Myth

The Legend

The Red Hare, 赤兔馬, is the fabled horse of the Three Kingdoms. A proud and legendary steed remembered for impossible speed, ferocity, and nobility. In the tales, Red Hare is most famously ridden by 呂布 Lü Bu, one of the era's most infamous warriors, a cavalry commander whose name became tied to collapsing dynasties, shifting loyalties, and brutal campaigns that blurred the line between history and legend. A beast worthy of a man feared across the battlefield.

Red Hare charging through smoke and war

Ashenfume's Red Hare imagines this creature forged beneath crimson skies and burning banners: smoke rising from scorched earth, hooves cutting through mud, saddle leather darkened by blood and sweat, resins scarred by flame, and the molten breath of 赤兔馬 moving through the chaos of war.

The fragrance opens with Red Champaka and Honeysuckle Absolute, glowing like floral embers in the battlefield air. Beneath them, dark vetiver, Horse Musk, and Meghalayan oud form the body of the beast. Musky, leathery, smoky, and alive with animal heat. Created in celebration of the Year of the Horse, traditionally associated with fire, determination, movement, and relentless forward momentum.

The hardest part of a horse perfume is the horse. No house can buy that smell, so we built it. Horse Musk is our own accord, an attempt to put an actual animal in the bottle rather than a saddle, and it is the reason this composition holds together.

The Materials

Meghalayan Oud
Aquilaria heartwood · Northeast India

Agarwood forms only when the Aquilaria tree is wounded and its heartwood turns to resin in defense. It is among the costliest raw materials on earth, gram for gram rarer than gold in its finest grades. Here it is the beast forged by injury, resin scarred by flame, the dark spine the whole composition rides on.

Horse Musk
Ashenfume house accord

Get close to a working horse and the smell is layered. Warm hide and the oily grease that sits in the coat, sweet grain and hay on the breath, salt drying on the neck, dust kicked into the mane, and the tack it has been carrying all day. There is no material on any supplier's shelf that does this, so we built the animal from parts. Costus root carries the hide and the hair, oily and close to skin. Hay and carob handle feed and bedding, dry and sweet and a little dusty. Warm musks and arnica sit underneath for body heat and for a horse that has been run past its wind. In the myth it is the living warmth of the horse, breath and hide, the pulse under the smoke.

Red Champaca Absolute
Michelia champaca · hand-harvested

Champaca blooms are gathered by hand at dawn and yield their absolute in tiny, expensive measure, a floral with the depth of tea, apricot, and warm leather. It opens the fragrance as the ember of the war banners, the first flush of color before the smoke rises.
