The Legend

Before she had a court or a name in any book, the Lady belonged to the water. In the oldest layer of the story she is a spirit of the lake, close kin to the nymphs of spring and river that older peoples believed lived in every sacred pool. She and her sisters were the light moving on still water. They fed the roots of the forest, drew thirsting animals down to drink, and left the herbs of the shore growing sweeter for their passing.
The peoples of ancient Britain and Gaul held water to be holy in a way that is difficult to feel now. Lakes, springs, and slow rivers were doorways to the world beneath, and the way you spoke to what lived there was to give it your finest things. Archaeologists still lift the proof of this from British lakebeds and riverbeds: swords, shields, cauldrons, and worked ornaments of real value, cast deliberately into the water as offerings and left there. A fine blade surrendered to a lake was among the most precious gifts a warrior could make. So when the legend has a lady beneath the surface lifting a sword up to a king, it is remembering something that truly happened.
The old world gave its swords to the water, and believed the water gave back.
By the time the medieval storytellers took her up, the water spirit had become an enchantress with a face and a will of her own. She is the one who meets a young king at the shore and raises Excalibur to him, the sword that names him rightful ruler and lays on him the duty to guard the land. She raised the greatest of his knights as her foster son, which is why he is remembered as Lancelot of the Lake. She learned her magic from Merlin and then closed him inside it forever. And at the end, when the king lay dying, it was to a barge of veiled women on the water that he was given, carried off across the lake toward the island where he might yet be healed. She stands at every threshold of the tale, the giver of the sword and the one who receives the fallen back into the deep.
She was never handed one steady name. The tellers called her Nimue, and Viviane, and Nyneve, and others besides, as though each of them had caught a reflection and none the whole face. Her true name, if a mortal ever held it at all, has slipped out of the world's memory. What remains is the title, plain and complete, the Lady of the Lake. It may be the most honest name for her, because she was always the water itself, wearing a shape long enough to be understood.
Her blessing fell only upon the worthy, for to carry such a sword was a sacred duty, to guide and guard the realms of man. It was never easily given.

Character
Curious what goes into the bottle?
Chios Mastic+
Wept as resin and gathered by hand on the southern half of the Greek island of Chios, the one corner of the earth where the tree gives it. Scored from the bark drop by drop and left to harden in the sun, the harvest has been guarded there as a protected treasure for thousands of years. Green, piney, faintly sweet, and clear as first light on a still surface.
Galbanum+
The greenest material in the whole craft, a Persian gum resin that smells of broken stems and cold sap. It cuts a bitter green edge across the opening and holds the shoreline sharp.
Juniper Berries+
The berry that gives gin its backbone, and long before that it gave the old world its cleansing smoke, burned across a doorway to purify a threshold. Here it draws a clean bitter-green line around the opening, the held breath at the edge of a sacred pool.
Violet Leaf+
Pressed from the foliage of the sweet violet for a very small return of absolute, a few grams at a time. Dewy, cool, and watery, with a bruised-green edge like reeds crushed underfoot at the lip of the lake and a faint metallic shimmer beneath.
Clary Sage+
Herbaceous and ambered, with a warm tea-like facet touched by wine. It takes a field of it to fill a small vial. It settles across the heart the way mist lies over a pool at first light, softening every hard line.
Virginian Cedar+
Steam-distilled from the red heartwood, dry and resinous with the clean smell of a freshly cut pencil. It stands as the upright spine of the midwater, the bare bones of the woodland she led the animals through.
Angelica Root+
A northern herb whose root is dug, dried, and pressed for an oil that smells of cold earth, root cellar, and a faint clean musk. It carries real weight, the pressure of dark water overhead and the silt of the lakebed underfoot.
Red Seaweed+
Saline, mineral, iodine cool, the taste of deep green water far below the shine of the surface. It keeps the base honest and a little wild, the cold current that curls around your ankles.
Indonesian Sandalwood+
Drawn from heartwood grown roughly fifty years before it was cut, held at a santalol richness that a young tree cannot reach. Creamy, lactonic, and quiet, it lines the lakebed with a warmth that holds long after the green has gone.
Labdanum+
One of the oldest amber materials in the craft, drawn from the rockrose that grows on hot Mediterranean hillsides. It was once so laborious to collect that herders combed it from the coats of goats that had brushed the shrubs all day. It spreads through the base like sunlight finally reaching the floor of the pool.
Ambergris Accord+
Natural ambergris is the sea's rarest gift, carried for years on the tides until it washes ashore salt-cured and radiant, and collectors have long called it floating gold. We hold to our pledge, so this is built as an accord that speaks in the same voice, skin-warm and marine and glowing, the last low light on the water as the surface goes to glass.
